Social Projects

After many years of intensive preliminary planning, MAL together with experts from various sectors placed the foundation in 1996, for the first environment friendly and social project in order to guarantee ecological naturally grown raw material, as a contribution towards sustainable development.

In Sri Lanka, most of the harvested coconut is produced by small farmers. Therefore the country is ideal for the project offering a possibility to “helping people help themselves”. Intensive discussions were necessary to convince the small farmers of the additional income derived by successfully converting the plantations from mono-culture to mix-culture cultivation. By marketing of fruits, vegetable and spices grown between coconut trees, the farmers could earn an additional income. At the same time, MAL in co-operation with experts developed methods to limit the alkalinity of the soil by applying natural fertilizers to coconut plantations.

MAL makes product donations to small enterprises in the district of Kurunegala, e. g. first aid boxes, water filters, helms & protective clothing. These are small family-owned enterprises engaged in the production of coconut products. With MAL’s help the production plant for coconut and the offer on certified coconut products have been expanded. We organize workshops with external experts in safety at work place, quality assurance and sustainability.

We finance our social projects through paying a certain percentage from each invoice for it. In this way we engage our customers in our projects too - only with their contribution we can keep our social projects alive.
